What It Means To Be a Woman Today ~via @EricaDiamond

Erica and I met at BlogHer 2010 at the Hilton New York in New York City... if I remember correctly it was on one of their long escalators in their conference area, and I was fortunate that she continued the conversation after we arrived at our destination floor. I have followed her content since, have learned a great deal, and always appreciate her outlook and insights, I am sure you will too, especially for International Women’s Day this week (Monday March 8th)...

Welcome to our special edition for International Women’s Day.

On International Women’s Day today, being a woman to me means being brave... and vulnerable. There is strength in showing you’re hurting or feeling something deeply- because it means you’re open to change. It means you’re evolving. It means that you’re not sliding things under the rug and then one day, erupt.

Being vulnerable means to be strong and secure enough within yourself that you are able to walk outside without your armor on. You are able to show up in life as just you. That's a true gift you give yourself.

Being a women to me means being courageous. It doesn’t mean that I won’t fall, but I damn well will dust myself off and get back up. It means resilience personified.

Being a woman to me means caring for my loved ones, but caring for myself too. Women are good at nurturing, but not so good at self-care.

Being a woman means I can be powerful and kind at the same time.

Being a woman means I define my own version of success- no matter how different that may look compared to society's standards or norms.

Being a woman means we have a responsibility to the entire sisterhood. We shouldn’t take that lightly.

Happy International Women’s Day to all my sisters near and far.

Today, I celebrate you,

Erica

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE...

This poem has been said to have been written by Maya Angelou, but it is written by none other than the brilliant Pamela Redmond, New York Times-bestselling author of more than 20 books of fiction and nonfiction, including the show that I binge watched, Younger. It’s an honor to have her personally share her poem with us today in honor of International Women’s Day.

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

enough money within her control to move out and rent a place of her own even if she never wants to or needs to…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

something perfect to wear if the employer or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE …

a youth she’s content to leave behind…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

a past juicy enough that she’s looking forward to retelling it in her old age…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black

lace bra…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

one friend who always makes her laugh… and one who lets her cry…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel honored…

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ….

a feeling of control over her destiny…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

how to fall in love without losing herself…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

how to quit a job,

break up with a lover,

and confront a friend without ruining the friendship…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

when to try harder… and when to walk away…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

that she can’t change the length of her calves,

the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

that her childhood may not have been perfect…but it’s over…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

what she would and wouldn’t do for love or more…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

how to live alone… even if she doesn’t like it…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

whom she can trust,

whom she can’t,

and why she shouldn’t

take it personally…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

where to go…

be it to her best friend’s kitchen table…

or a charming inn in the woods…

when her soul needs soothing…

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW…

what she can and can’t accomplish in a day…

a month…and a year…

Pamela Redmond

Flashback to #IWD19, when I was asked to participate in a photoshoot to celebrate the magic that happens when strong, boundary pushing women get together. It was a true testament to how powerful the vibe of our tribe really is. We had women from all walks of life. Restaurateurs, doctors, mathematicians, real estate agents, writers, jewellers, designers etc…

Thank you for reading today's special edition.

Here's to strong women.

May we know them.

May we be them.

May we raise them.
