“Oh, you’re an event planner? What a fun job!”
To which anyone who knows what it’s really like to be an event planner takes a deep breath and just says “yep” while screaming inside “IF YOU ONLY KNEW…”
What is it REALLY like to be an event planner? A great planner is a skilled problem solver – a worst case scenario planner. Someone who anticipates what issues could arise in every situation and resolves those issues before they rear their ugly head.
Most days are filled with lots of phone calls to inquire, confirm, and re-confirm a service or availability. We create contracts, sign contracts, track & manage budgets.
Sometimes we get to conceive and design new events & experiences. And while that’s always fun ~ my favorite part is finding the perfect venue to match the client’s vision. Truth be told, most of our work is administrative in nature.
On activation days, it’s a steady crescendo of orchestrated tasks. It’s not for the faint of heart. Not everyone can manage multiple people asking for varying bits of information and direction all at the same time. And that’s OK – I’m not great at balancing a spreadsheet. But I am really good at being calm in a thick storm. The best part of activation days is when you’ve made it through all the set up and hiccups and the event clicks into place and takes off on its own. There’s only so much you can control during an event – it’s really tough to control what guests & visitors will do so once they arrive, you have to let go of the reins a bit and let the event take off. That’s not to say the work is done when the guests arrive; we actually like to sprinkle surprises within the span of the event in order to give it a little pep if it needs it. Surprise and delight – for the guests and our clients.
Our main goal with every experience we design is to be memorable. We want them to walk away with an experience that they won’t forget in all the best ways. The cherry on top is if they share the experience with friends.
